🏎️ Sim-Racing

This blog post will be about my journey into the world of sim-racing. I will be talking about the equipment I use, the games I play and more.

The History

If you read my previous, and very first blog post, you will know that the very first 3D game I played was Formula 1, which was just an arcade F1 racing game. Ever since then, I have been a fan of racing games, and I have played many of them throughout the years.

I, like a lot of mid-2000s kids, do have great memories of playing Colin McRae: Dirt, Need for Speed: Most Wanted and especially Need for Speed: Underground 2!

At that point, I was for the most part stil playing with a keyboard, but somewhere around 2004 or so I got my first wheel. Don’t know the exact model, but I know it was a red Thrustmaster wheel. I remember playing Viper Racing with it, which was a really fun game at the time!

The Hardware

I have been playing racing games on and off since then, but it wasn’t until the end of 2021 that I really got into sim-racing. Initially wanted to go slower, so I bought myself a Fanatec GT DD Pro wheel, Fanatec ClubSport Pedals V3 and a PlaySeat Evolution Pro seat. Quite qucikly I realized I wanted more, so out goes the seat and in comes a Trak Racer TR160 MK4 cockpit!

Because I now had more space on the rig to mount stuff, I also bought a Fanatec ClubSport Shifter SQ V1.5 and a Fanatec ClubSport Handbrake V1.5. I also bought a Fanatec ClubSport Formula V2.5 X steering wheel for when I want to drive open-wheel cars, which is like 99% of the time.

Additionally, since I didn’t really like the way the breaks felt, I also upgraded the pedals with Fanatec ClubSport Pedals V3 Brake Performance Kit for the brake and Fanatec ClubSport Pedals V3 Damper Kit for the throttle.

The Result

Enough talk! Let’s see some pictures of the setup!

As you can see, I will probably not get an award for cable management, but it will need to do for now! Additional things you may have noticed are the tripple Dell S3422DWG gaming monitors, Dayton Audio BST-1 50W bass shakers and more. In a future blog post, I may get more into detail about the bass shakers, custom button box and the flag LED lights - if you do however have any questions, feel free to get in touch with me!

The Racing Games

Now let’s also talk about the sim titles out there! I personally have mostly been playing Automobilista 2 and Asseto Corsa Competizione. Of course I also have pretty much all the other sim titles out there (Asseto Corsa, rFactor 2, Project CARS 2, KartKraft™, and so on), but I have mostly been playing AMS2 and ACC. I obviosuly also tried iRacing for a couple of weeks, but I am not ready for the subscription model yet.

Anyway, that is it for now! I hope you enjoyed this blog post and I will see you in the next one!
